The Power of Essential Oils During Labor:
Your Natural Support System
When it comes to labor, every tool in your toolkit matters. Essential oils have been used for centuries to support the mind and body, and during childbirth, they can be a powerful, natural way to promote calm, manage discomfort, and keep you grounded through every wave. As a doula, these oils are staples in my bag — I never show up to a birth without them. Here's a look at three of the best essential oils to have by your side on your birthing day.

Lavender: The Calming Anchor
Lavender is arguably the most well-known essential oil, and for good reason — it is a powerhouse when it comes to relaxation. During labor, anxiety and tension can work against the body's natural process, causing muscles to tighten and contractions to feel more intense. Lavender helps counter this by calming the nervous system, lowering feelings of stress and anxiety, and promoting a sense
of peace and safety.
Diffuse it in your birthing room, add a few drops to a warm compress, or apply it diluted to your wrists and temples for a steady stream of calm throughout labor. Many mothers also find that simply inhaling lavender during a contraction helps them breathe deeper and stay more present.
Peppermint: The Energizing Refresh
Labor is a marathon, and there are moments when exhaustion, nausea, or the overwhelming intensity of it all can feel like too much. This is where peppermint shines. Peppermint essential oil is widely used to combat nausea — something many mothers experience during active labor and transition — and its cool, crisp scent has an instantly refreshing and energizing effect on the mind.
A few drops on a cool cloth placed on the back of the neck can provide relief during the harder waves, while simply inhaling it straight from the bottle can quickly ease an unsettled stomach. Peppermint is also known to support focus and alertness, helping you stay mentally sharp and present when you need it most.
Orange: The Mood Lifter
Sweet orange essential oil is often overlooked, but it deserves a top spot in your labor bag. With its bright, warm, and uplifting scent, orange is known for its ability to ease fear, reduce tension, and instantly boost mood. Studies have shown that orange essential oil can significantly reduce anxiety, making it a wonderful companion during the more emotionally intense phases of labor.
Beyond its emotional benefits, the familiar, comforting scent of orange has a grounding quality that can help bring you back to the present moment when your mind starts to wander into fear or doubt. Diffuse it alongside lavender for a beautifully balanced blend of calm and positivity in your birthing space.

Tips for Using Essential Oils During Labor
Diffuser: The easiest and most consistent way to fill your space with the benefits of essential oils throughout labor.
Inhalation: Place a drop or two on a cotton ball or inhale directly from the bottle for quick, targeted relief.
Diluted topical application: Mix with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba before applying to skin — wrists, temples, or the back of the neck are great spots.
Cool compress: Add a drop to a cool or warm cloth and apply to the forehead or neck for comfort during contractions.
Cotton balls in a baggy: If you're worried about wanting to switch scents during labor, put a drop on a cotton ball and store each scent in its own small bag. When you're done with one, simply toss it and move on to the next — easy, mess-free, and totally customizable to how you're feeling in the moment.
Always consult with your midwife or healthcare provider before using essential oils during labor, especially if you have any sensitivities or medical considerations. When used thoughtfully, these three oils — lavender, peppermint, and orange — can become some of your greatest allies on one of the most transformative days of your life.
