What's in My Doula Bag?

One of the questions I get asked most often is — what exactly do you bring to a birth? The answer is: a lot of love and a very well-packed bag. Every item I carry has a purpose, and together they help create an environment where you feel supported, comfortable, and empowered. Here's a peek inside my doula bag!

The Tools

Mini Bluetooth Speaker Music can completely transform the energy of a birthing space. Whether you want calming instrumentals, your favorite playlist, or something to help you breathe through contractions, having great sound makes a big difference.

Counter Pressure Ball Back labor is no joke, and counter pressure can be a game changer. This little ball allows me to apply targeted pressure to help ease discomfort during contractions.

Labor Comb This is one of my favorite tools and always surprises people! Holding a comb in the palm of your hand and applying light pressure to the fingers activates acupressure points that can help reduce the perception of pain during contractions. Simple, but incredibly effective.

Jade Comb for Scalp Massage A gentle scalp massage with a jade comb during labor is deeply relaxing and grounding. It's a small moment of calm that can make a big difference during the harder waves.

Rebozo A rebozo is a traditional woven cloth that has been used by midwives and birth workers for generations. I use it for sifting, repositioning, and providing comfort and support throughout labor. It is one of the most versatile tools in my bag.

Essential Oils I never show up to a birth without my oils. I carry lavender for calm, peppermint for nausea and energy, and sweet orange for mood and anxiety relief. For tips on how to use them, check out my essential oils blog post!

Massage Oil & Lotion Touch is one of the most powerful forms of support during labor. I use massage oil and lotion for back massages, hip pressure, and general comfort throughout the birthing process.

Handheld Fan Labor is hard work and things can get warm fast. A handheld fan provides instant relief and can be especially helpful during transition.

Honey Sticks Keeping your energy up during labor is so important. Honey sticks are a quick, easy, and natural way to get a little boost when you need it most.

Peanut Ball Cards & Labor Position Cards I bring cards for both peanut ball positioning and general labor positions so you can see exactly how each one looks before we move you into it. No surprises — just clear, informed choices every step of the way.

Laminated Copy of Your Birth Plan I keep a laminated copy of your birth plan in my bag so it is always accessible and protected. You will also have a copy for your own bag.

What You Can Bring: Packing Tips for Your Bag

Now let's talk about YOUR bag! I provide every client with an example check off sheet so you can see exactly what to bring and make sure nothing gets forgotten. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Comfort Essentials

  • Comfy clothes and fuzzy socks — you are absolutely welcome to labor in your own clothes if that feels better for you

  • Hair ties (I also keep extras in my bag for you!)

  • Lip balm — my biggest tip and the most forgotten item. Between breathing through contractions and dry hospital air, you will need it

  • Eye mask

Food & Drinks

  • Snacks to keep your energy up throughout labor

  • Your own water bottle if you prefer (the hospital provides these, but having your own is always a nice touch)

Tech Essentials

  • Phone and charger

  • A polaroid camera — one of my favorite suggestions! These make for the most beautiful, raw memories from your birthing day

Ambience This is one of my favorite things to help clients think about. Hospitals can feel clinical and cold — but they don't have to. You have every right to make that space feel warm and safe. Here are some ideas:

  • Flameless candle tealights

  • Wave lights

  • Salt lamp

  • Twinkle lights

  • Affirmation cards

These small touches can completely shift the energy of the room and help you feel more at ease and at home.

Find Everything You Need in One Place

I have linked all of my favorite products — including everything on this list — on my Resources Page under the Amazon Link. Everything is hand-picked and mama-approved, so you can shop with confidence and show up to your birth fully prepared.

You deserve to feel supported, comfortable, and surrounded by good energy on your birthing day. Let's make that happen.
